At Early Learning Childcare Centre, we see every day how play-based learning supports children's development in meaningful ways.

At our Westwood location in Port Coquitlam, children learn through exploration, outdoor experiences, storytelling, and hands-on play. These moments can help build confidence, communication, creativity, social-emotional growth, and problem-solving skills—through experiences that feel natural, engaging, and joyful.

What Is Play-Based Learning?

Play-based learning is an approach that recognizes the importance of children's curiosity, interests, and active participation. Rather than separating play from learning, educators create opportunities for children to explore ideas, use their imagination, interact with others, and learn by doing.

Hands-On Discovery and Problem-Solving

When children experiment with toy construction vehicles, natural materials, or outdoor equipment, they can practise observing, making choices, testing ideas, and adapting when things don't work as expected.

Movement, Confidence and Independence

Climbing, balancing, riding playground equipment, and navigating outdoor spaces offer opportunities for coordination, body awareness, confidence, and independence. Educators provide appropriate supervision and encouragement as children explore at their own pace.

Stories, Language and Connection

Story time and group experiences give children chances to listen, ask questions, build vocabulary, notice others' ideas, and share the enjoyment of a story. These moments can also nurture a sense of belonging and community.

The Role of Early Childhood Educators

Behind meaningful play-based learning are thoughtful educators who observe children's interests, prepare welcoming environments, support positive relationships, and adapt experiences to different needs and developmental stages.

We're grateful to the educators at Westwood and throughout British Columbia for the patience and care they bring to this important work.

Growing Through Everyday Experiences

From toy trucks and playground exploration to outdoor storytelling, these ordinary childhood experiences can help children learn about themselves, their friends, and the world around them.
