A Little Weather, A Lot of Wonder: Outdoor Learning at Barnet in Coquitlam
Outdoor play is an important part of early childhood education, and children have opportunities to learn from their surroundings throughout the changing seasons.
At Early Learning Childcare Centre's Barnet location in Coquitlam, British Columbia, everyday outdoor experiences provide opportunities for children to explore, experiment, imagine, and learn alongside their friends.
Learning Through Nature and Sensory Exploration
Outdoor environments offer a variety of textures, materials, sounds, and experiences that invite children's curiosity.
Exploring natural materials and observing their surroundings can encourage children to ask questions, test ideas, and discover how things work.
Building Confidence Through Play
Playing outdoors gives children opportunities to make choices, practise coordination, and develop independence.
Whether they're exploring playground spaces, experimenting with toys, or participating in imaginative activities, these experiences can help support confidence and problem-solving skills.
Friendships and Shared Discoveries
Outdoor play also creates opportunities for children to communicate, collaborate, and learn alongside others.
The simplest shared experiences can encourage patience, cooperation, and a sense of belonging.
Supporting Outdoor Learning in Different Seasons
Outdoor learning isn't limited to warm, sunny days.
With appropriate clothing, supervision, and attention to weather conditions, children can enjoy enriching outdoor experiences during different parts of the year.
Our educators play an important role in helping children explore safely while supporting their curiosity and individual developmental needs.
Thank You to Our Educators
We're grateful to the early childhood educators at Barnet and throughout British Columbia who create opportunities for children to experience the world through meaningful play.
Sometimes, a little change in weather simply brings new things to discover.
